Day 1. Llangollen to Froncysyllte 10.2k

A fantastic Day 1, will be tricky to determine how far we walked since we went off Offa quite a bit. After arriving at the B&B we relieved ourselves of our backpacks and did a 10K loop to walk over the Pontcysyllte aquaduct, with a few times going in the wrong direction, we are agreed on 21K for the day, ~ 7 hours walking.

Dropped off in Llangollen at about 10ish by my darling sister and mum and dad came too. During the hour drive it poured with rain, so much relived that it had stopped by the time we started walking.

It was a sad goodbye in Llangollen and then across the river and a steepish climb to get to the ODT proper, which is signposted with an acorn.

There was a sponsored walk going on, so we passed quite a few walkers going in the opposite direction. I was so excited to cross over stiles but it seems that they have been replaced by kissing gates and we passed through 10. It was when we went off Offa that we climbed over 6 stiles. We’re a bit curious about the change.

The extra loop to walk along the longest aqueduct in the UK built in 1795-1805 was worth it.

And the boats go along the aquaduct. Dinner was Italian flat bread along the banks of the Llangollen canal served from a long boat. Delicious!

Walking with my childhood friend, Debbsie, a recently retired ornithologist, there was a lot of birdwatching too.
English robin, great tit, goldfinch, buzzards, dunnock are some of the birds we identified today.

Quote from my nephew- “ why would you want to go for a walk with someone you haven’t seen for 10 years?” Really made us laugh, the time just collapsed and we Ramsgate girls had lots of fun catching up and laughing while walking.
Oh and quite a lot of wild flower spotting too. Staying at a friendly B&B “Cloud Hill” right on the ODT with a very sweet host.

Survive the evening sans wine...too tired to go to the pub.

A snap from my parents diary of the same section walked in the opposite direction. They camped and carried huge backpacks and also had quite a lot of rain.

Additional notes on the B&B Cloud Hill. It is right on the ODT which is a bonus, run by an elderly couple. The lady very sweet and I gave her a pair of my handknitted socks. The house is an older contemporary style that has seen better days, but clean and the breakfast was good.
