Day 2. Froncysyllte to Trefnonen 25.5K

~ 25.5K, ~7.5 hours of walking 15 kissing gates and 24 actual stiles, plus some other gates that we aren’t counting.

The birds for the day- the ones that Deb the ornithologist heard but didn’t see:  green and great spotted woodpeckers, raven, goldcrest, willow warbler, chiffchaff, blackcap.

The birds we spotted: bullfinch, bluetit, goldfinch, nuthatch, swallows, swifts and house martins, raven, jackdoor, crow.

Butterflies: red admiral, small tortoiseshell, speckled wood, holly blue.

Interestingly when we crossed from Wales to Shropshire England we started to cross over real stiles and of course we did it in style.

The green kissing gate seems to have replaced the stile in Wales but in England, we climbed over a few styles today, they are great for stretching the thighs for someone like me with short legs.

The stiles that one doesn’t actually have climb over because the fence is gone. It seems that the fields have become larger, another reason why we have encountered less stiles than anticipated from my parents diary.

Saw the Camino sign in a little hamlet, a little out of place.

Spent the evening rushing around looking for Wilfred Owen’s grave to no avail but discovers that a memorial to him is being built and will be finished in October. Received all sorts of miss information about the location of his birthplace which is in fact outside Oswestry.
